Illustrated portrait of Marcus Turner

Marcus Turner

I design & build websites people enjoy using.

Software engineer building web apps and bespoke sites. Currently freelancing, open to my next full-time role.

Hi, I'm Marcus Turner, a developer with 5+ years of experience building websites and web applications, primarily in React and Next.js.

Across a dev agency and a startup, I've learned to take a vague brief from idea to production: understanding the problem and the business need first, then designing and shipping the solution. My roots are in front-end, with enough of the stack (Prisma, Supabase) to deliver complete, reliable products.

I care about outcomes, not just code: what I build should move the business it's built for.

Work History

Software Engineer

February 2024 - July 2026

I worked closely with non-technical stakeholders across multiple departments, turning everyday business friction into internal tools. That meant scoping the problem with the people living it, then designing and shipping the solution in Next.js, TypeScript, and MUI.

Internal CRM & Analytics Platform — Designed and built the CRM the business runs on, covering claim lifecycle tracking, client management, and reporting. Stage-based pipelines move R&D and VAT claims through their workflow, real-time dashboards show where everything stands, and integrated email tooling keeps HMRC correspondence alongside the claim it belongs to.

Client Onboarding Platform — Replaced a slow, manual, email-based document collection process with a portal where clients securely upload documents themselves. Files are sorted and organised automatically, and staff can monitor progress, view key metrics, and approve or reject submissions.

Led web development and design on a small team, delivering brochure sites, forms, and other tools for small businesses. Ran project discovery with clients to clarify requirements when needs were unclear, and supported copywriting.

Kotobachi

Design & Build · Web App · 2026

Kotobachi is a full-stack app for learning Japanese in context: chat with AI personas, or read short stories generated at your level, then turn any new word into a flashcard with a single click. AI fills in the readings, meanings, and examples for you, and spaced-repetition reviews help it stick.

  • Kotobachi dashboard showing retention stages, due reviews, and pet mood
  • AI-generated Japanese short story with tappable vocabulary
  • Flashcard creation form auto-filled by AI
  • Spaced-repetition flashcard review session

01 / 04 Dashboard

Built with Next.js and Supabase, with the OpenAI API tucked behind a secure backend that enforces usage limits so it can't be abused. Reviews are scheduled with FSRS, the same spaced-repetition algorithm used by modern Anki.

Emsie

Design & Build · Brand Site · 2026

Emsie is a Cornwall-based artist working across a range of mediums, including acrylic, watercolour, and mixed media. She needed a website to showcase her work, with the ability to update the content herself.

  • Emsie homepage hero
  • Emsie artist introduction section
  • Emsie artistic process section
  • Emsie pullquote and artwork
  • Emsie footer

I set up and configured Decap CMS for the project, giving her full control over the site's content without touching any code. Check it out here.
